Courses and programmes

If you are interested in the molecular processes of life and want to study at the frontier where chemistry and biology meet, our programmes and courses are definitely for you. With us, you can learn about all aspects of proteins and how they can be studied using biophysical, biochemical and bioinformatics methods.

Find your course or programme

Our courses and programmes cover everything from how proteins can be engineered and expressed recombinantly, to how they are synthesised, fold, and perform their various functions in cells and play roles in a number of diseases. We also offer courses with special focus on the biochemistry of neurons and the nervous system.

The complexity of the nervous system.

PhD studies

The Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics performs world-class research in a number of areas including protein structure, folding, complex formation & trafficking, molecular studies on mitochondria, membrane protein topology and assembly, transmembrane transport, protein-lipid-interactions, computational biophysics, bioinformatics, machine learning, neurodegeneration, the electrical and network properties of neurons as well as the brain’s control of behavior. A number of organisms are studied, from bacteria and yeast, to mice and plants. The Department provides cutting edge equipment, and the research groups utilize a wide range of state-of-the-art methods.

Master's programmes

We offer two different master's programmes, one in Biochemistry with specialization in protein chemistry, and one in Neurochemistry with molecular neurobiology.

Each master's programme is two years long (120 credits) and consists of courses and a degree project (30, 45 or 60 credits). Each programme has mandatory and optional courses, and are given in English.

We are also part of a master's programme in Molecular Techniques in Life Science given jointly by The Royal institute of Technology, Karolinska institute and Stockholm University.

Proteins are the building blocks of life. They play a central role in various disease processes and can also be used for therapeutic purposes. If you want to learn more about these fascinating molecules then the master’s programme in Biochemistry with specialization in protein chemistry could be for you.

Master's Programme in Biochemistry with specialization in protein chemistry

Are you interested in how the nervous system works at its most fundamental level? Do you want to study at the frontier where chemistry and biology meet? Then this highly selective master’s programme, the only one in Europe dedicated to neurochemistry with molecular neurobiology, could be for you.

Master's Programme in Neurochemistry with Molecular Neurobiology

The joint master's programme in Molecular Techniques in Life Science fosters graduates for a professional research career in life science. It has a strong focus on molecular techniques for disease therapies and diagnostic tools, coupled with substantial training in data analysis (bioinformatics and programming). The programme is a collaboration between Karolinska Institutet, KTH and Stockholm University at the Science for Life Laboratory in Stockholm.

Courses in English or Swedish?

Our overview and bachelor's level courses are held in Swedish, whereas our master's courses are in English.

Most of the courses included in our bachelor’s and master’s programmes are also available as freestanding courses. In addition, we also offer two introductory courses given in Swedish and aimed to the general public:

The Molecules of Life ("Livets molekyler")

The Biochemistry of the Brain ("Hjärnans biokemi").

Before applying to a freestanding course, it is important to check the entry requirements. You can find more information about all our courses and their entry requirements by searching the SU course catalog.

The Bachelor's programme in Chemistry is a 3-year programme held in Swedish and administered through the Chemistry Section.

The first two years cover the different fields of chemistry, including biochemistry. In the third year, you can take further specialization courses and do your bachelor degree project in the biochemistry field.
