The autumn semester of 2017 has been a quite hectic period with many different issues that affect our Department. Needless to say, the most important issues are related to the merger between the Department of biochemistry and biophysics and the Department of neurochemistry. The new Department (Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, DBB) will be in place on New Years Day. Hopefully, most practical issues will have been solved by then. On the 1st of January neurochemistry will have merged with DBB´s keycard system for example, so everyone will have access to both sides of the new Department. We have a new Departmental board in place for 2018, the results of the election were announced earlier this week and are found on our webpage ( The first meeting of the new board will take place on January 24.

This is an exciting merge and I am convinced that we will all benefit from this, not least from a scientific point of view. If not before, this became obvious at our very successful retreat at Yasuragi earlier this month. I have had a lot of positive feedback on this meeting and I would like to thank all of you for being there. We also have exciting new recruitments to look forward to during 2018; new professors in biochemistry and in neurochemistry will be recruited to DBB.

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank the numerous people who have contributed to making the transitions connected with the merge as smooth as possible and for helping out in the various working groups that we organized during the fall. The work is by no means all done but hopefully we are off to a good start. So at this point, I would like to wish you all relaxing holidays and a Happy New Year, and welcome you all back to the new DBB next year.

All the best
