Announcement of a postdoctoral scholarship (two years) at the department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Stockholm University


The postdoctoral studies which will focus on an APOEε4-related liver phenotype and its relevance to neurodegeneration will be carried out in the Translational Neurodegeneration Research Laboratory headed by Dr Henrietta Nielsen. The scholarship is enabled by a grant from Olle Engkvists Stiftelse.

The APOEε4 gene variant, carried by approximately 15-20 % of the general population, dramatically increases the risk of both Alzheimer’s disease and dementia with Lewy bodies, however the underlying mechanisms are not clear. An increasing amount of evidence, including data from the Nielsen lab, suggests that peripheral characteristics like low plasma apolipoprotein E levels are directly linked to the increased risk of neurodegenerative disease. Apolipoprotein E is mainly produced and secreted by the liver whereas in the central nervous system it is produced by glial cells. The two pools of apolipoprotein E do not mix as peripheral apolipoprotein E cannot cross the blood-brain-barrier, yet peripheral apolipoprotein E appears to be of significance to the brain. The current project aims to in detail characterize and investigate a liver-associated peripheral APOEε4 phenotype and its relevance to neurodegenerative processes in the brain.

Eligible candidates need to fulfill the Stockholm University scholarship criteria including a recent PhD degree acquired at an institution outside of Sweden within the last three years. Qualification requirements include an advanced level of expertise in molecular biology, mammalian cell culture, SDS-PAGE and Western Blot, ELISA, immunocyto- and histochemistry, PCR and biostatistics. A documented track-record of research into neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease and/or synucleinopathies, or hepatology is desirable. Fluent spoken and written English is a requirement.

The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to successfully complete the postdoctoral studies. Important criteria when assessing this capacity are; documented knowledge and skills in the field of the project, written and oral proficiency in English, the capacity for analytical thinking, the ability to collaborate, as well as creativity, successful grant writing and overall independence.

The recruitment includes two steps with interviews, a proposal draft and a 15 min presentation relating to the project.
