Free information and social media has brought to rapid spread of news across the world giving everyone the opportunity to speak out and be listened. Despite this undeniable progress, social media have also seen the legitimation of non-scientifically supported theories and the raise of the more than ever actual “alternative facts”. This is particularly true in the scientific world where data and facts are often ignored and replaced by unproven theories in alternative medicine and life science.

Dan Larhammar, professor at the Department of Neuroscience at Uppsala University and currently chair and primary spokesman at the Royal Academy of Science will visit us and will present about why pseudoscience and alternative medicine is becoming so popular in our society, how those theories get legitimated and what the scientific community is doing about it.

This lunch seminar part of a new series of seminars called Talking Brains, independently organized by the DBB PhD Council and held in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at Stockholm University. The series aims at bringing together recognized experts from different scientific areas to inspire the employees at the department with lectures that extend beyond the interests of our every

day research.
